The causes of facial skin cancer are of 2 types:

Individual related
  • The phenotype: according to the classification of Fitzpatrick, there are six skin phenotypes that include an increased risk of cancer
  • Some genetic problems: xeroderma pigmentosum, albinism, epidermodysplasia wart and porokeratosis.
  • Predisposing lesions: nevi of Jadassohn, actinic keratosis.
  • Immunological factors
Environmental related
  • UV and sun exposure
  • Ionizing radiation
  • Chemicals (usually taken from air, but not restricted to some kinds of face creams)

Preventing skin cancer on face thus includes the application of sunscreen lotions, proper clothing and early education of the population. The diagnosis of facial skin cancer is established primarily by biopsy.

Treatment

Treatment of skin cancer on face depends on the size of the lesion, the number of lesions and pathological diagnosis. Some clinicians treat all actinic keratosis spots, others include only the ones which increase in size, as some lesions regress spontaneously. The treatment procedures can be:

  • Cryotherapy by liquid nitrogen
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy (with 5-fluorouracil)
  • Dermabrasion: Dermabrasion or skin surface with a chemical peel
  • Photodynamic therapy or photochemotherapy: This method employs a systemic photo sensitizer followed by exposure to light of a specific wavelength that can destroy cells.
